By midnight the palazzo had become a maze of candlelight, mirrors and borrowed names. Elara Finch could identify every costume she had made, even when its owner tried to disappear inside it.
The stranger in the black-and-gold mask was different. She knew the stitching along its edge because she had sewn it herself, yet the curator who commissioned it had never agreed to wear it in public.
“One question in every room,” he said when she caught him watching her reflection. “One honest answer. At dawn, the masks come off.” Beyond the balcony doors, Venice shone on black water. Elara accepted before she could decide which answer frightened her most.

Why the masks matter
Elara knows the stranger's mask through the work of her own hands, even while his identity remains partly hidden. Their rule of one honest answer per room turns the palazzo into a sequence of decisions. Each new room can change how much they reveal without requiring the masks to come off immediately.
Ideas for your own continuation
Give Elara a question about why the curator finally chose to wear the mask, or write the room in which she is asked something about her own work. Save the reveal for a moment both characters choose. These are prompts for your own continuation, not fixed dialogue options in this preview.
